Annie Cox was born in Marshall County, Kentucky in 1893. Her father was a successful farmer engaged in a variety of agriculture and lumbering activities. She was educated in public schools in Marshall County and attended Bowling Green Teachers College where she earned a teaching certificate. She later obtained a Bachelor's degree in education in Oklahoma. She taught schools in Oklahoma, Arizona, and Marshall County, Kentucky.
